Personal Style... Junya Watanabe

Personal Style… Junya Watanabe

Every season there’s a few collections I fall head-over-heels in love with. Past infatuations include Balenciaga Spring 2008Thakoon Fall 2011 and Creatures of the Wind Fall 2012, and I’m proud to say I have a piece from every one. I think of myself like an art collector, only I wear what I own instead of hanging it on my walls. Junya Watanabe Spring 2013 is my most recent obsession. Combining Puma athletic fabrics with sexy, feminine silhouettes is simply brilliant. And this skirt? It goes with practically every top I own, from tees to proper button-down blouses. I paired it with a nude top and Margiela H&M flats for a perfect casual Saturday spent street-style hunting.

Transformative fashion is like lightning – you know when it strikes. I feel uplifted, powerful, and beautiful when I wear this Junya Watanabe coat dress. Azzedine Alaïa might see his design lineage in this piece, but its sporty, athletic construction and innovative textiles are pure Junya. It’s techno-couture at its finest. Lower Wacker Drive – a deep, cavernous labyrinth of underground roads that forms the beating heart of Chicago’s Loop financial district – was the perfect backdrop for the architecture of this piece.

Yes, it’s clear that I’m obsessed. You don’t even need to say it. I’m well aware. There’s always this weird tension of whether or not to wear a designer’s pieces to the show. Sure, it’s an obvious & predictable styling move but it’s also a kindhearted one, a way of showing designers support.
