Creatures of the Wind

Creatures of the Wind

The longer I stare at the photo of myself above, the more I start looking like a character from an as-of-yet unproduced Tarantino movie set in the 1960s about a female assassin. The nameless heroine wears Creatures of the Wind to skulk around in the shadows of Bertrand Goldberg buildings, shooting poison blow-darts at unsuspecting Don Draper lookalikes…

Elaborate and delusional, I know. But I am the only person who makes up little stories about my outfits?

WAIT – Don’t answer that. Haha!

This skirt is everything. I mean, who else but Creatures could marry a rainbow striped tweed with a boxy print? The stripes remind me of the old cathode ray tube television SMPTE test screen, while the plaid has the most incredible early 1970s Winnebago interior meets The Brady Bunch vibe. It’s that sort of brilliant nostalgia that Creatures nails so well, season after season.

It’s also cut for a woman’s body, which I somehow woke up with one day in late 2011. Puberty just popped its head in to say oh hai thar 10 years late. Hmmmm… maybe 25 is the new 15? There’s a teenage innocence about this skirt, so it makes sense that somehow I’d stumble upon the tangent of 8th grade health class lessons about (gasp!) changing bodies. Typical.

street style dannijo bracelets

Dannijo bracelets photographed at New York fashion week

Recently I bought my first piece of Dannijo jewelry, which was honestly a long time coming. I’ve lusted after the crystal-embellished friendship bracelets since they first appeared on street-style blogs a few seasons ago. Jena graciously hosted a charity sale for Hurricane Sandy and sold select items from her wardrobe to raise funds. I picked up the friendship bracelet below, which I wore on my last trip to corporate headquarters in Deerfield with my Rodarte + Opening Ceremony skirt plus J.Crew cashmere sweater and blouse.

Smiling all day because you’re wearing something amazing is the purest joy fashion can provide, and it happens to me every time I wear this bracelet with a corporate ensemble. Subversive fashion in an environment defined by a dress code…

J.W. Anderson + Margiela H&M

‘Illusion’ was the inspiration for my outfit last Saturday street-style hunting around Chicago. When I picked out this J.W. Anderson x Topshop tee I did so knowing full well that I’d be rocking it with my Margiela H&M hair necklace. I love how together they bring a 3-D quality to my look. If you couldn’t tell it was the back of someone’s head, the hair necklace provides a crucial clue. There’s a creepiness that I simply couldn’t resist exploring.

As I was walking down Damen Avenue, a man standing in front of David’s Tea offering samples took one look at me and said “Girl, you’ve got swag!” He was so enthusiastic about my sneakers and my leather-sleeved coat, which I had cinched shut with the clear Margiela H&M plastic belt. I always take these experiences as evidence that Chicagoans love fashion and design as much as any other global city, but it also makes me happy for the rest of the day. Seriously – who doesn’t love it when someone stops you on the street and recognizes the thought you put into constructing your outfit? Oh hello, street-style photography…..
