Winter street-style in Chicago is all about layering. It’s not just a fashion statement, it’s necessary for survival. That’s why our city has some of the best winter street-style in the world and why our summer street-style could use some improvement. Chicagoans layer year-round but it’s during the coldest months that you really see our ingenuity at play.
Take a look at what Katerina is wearing. I spotted her walking down Milwaukee Avenue in Wicker Park. Between the proportion play of her maxidress with her coat and the texture of the fur, this is an excellent example of how to stay stylish (and comfortable) as temperatures plummet.

Emily Draznik has one of the coolest styles in Chicago and it’s always a pleasure running into her. This time I caught her shopping along Michigan Avenue. The design student isn’t afraid to take fashion risks, which is one of my favorite things to see. In this photo she’s wearing an AllSaints leather jacket and a TopShop pleated skirt. The leopard print loafers, red lips and bold glasses are the perfect accents to add a healthy dose of personality into the look.

The crown jewel for all street-style photographers who shoot for Refinery29 is to land a coveted “Perfect Outfit Story,” which is sent to all email subscribers. The reason this is great for us is because normally for our photographs to be seen people have to actually visit Refinery29 and click through to the post. Plus, the New York-based creative directors have very high standards for both the outfits and backgrounds, which makes this not only an honor but a “seal of approval.” I randomly spotted indie fashion designer Lauren Gabrielson in Wicker Park last month. I love how she layered fur over a supple leather jacket. And lest we forget her vintage Chanel pumps which I first published a few weeks back. This truly is a perfect outfit.
