When I saw Ariel walking out of the Division CTA stop it was street-style infatuation at first sight. Overall jeans require just the right amount of laid-back quirkiness to pull off the look, and she nailed it.

America’s never been much of a hat-wearing culture, and it’s a shame. Hats are a simple way to add a dash of personality to any outfit. Sure, up until the 1960s men and women both wore hats, but headgear has never enjoyed the power or ubiquity here in the States that it does in the UK.

And yet, the recent popularity of luxe baseball caps and flower headdresses are drawing attention to the American tête like never before, single-handedly revitalizing the stateside crafting industry. Don’t believe me? An Etsy search for ‘flower headbands’ returns over 219,000 results.

Berstock Speirs ‘Classic Bunny Cap,’ £65.00

If you’re looking for the perfect hat to make a statement, this adorable Bernstock Speirs Classic Bunny cap is sure to do the trick. You may be thinking to yourself “well, Susie Bubble can pull off anything, so why would this work on me?” Challenge accepted. This hat is sporty, perfect for hiding bad hair days, and has just the right amount of quirk. Boom.

A smart statement piece like this hat can elevate even the simplest everyday looks. Toss on this cap with a soft knit tee, boyfriend jeans and flats, and you’re instantly street-style photographer catnip. Plus it’s a great deal for a designer hat at only $110. High quality hats easily surpass $500, and go up from there.

Can you tell I’m in love?

After deciding to make the jump from fashion blogger to copywriter a few years ago, I’ve been singularly focused on solidifying my career. Socializing (and fun in general) was abandoned in favor of late nights & hard work for the past 2 years, with just a couple breaks over Christmas. Just like everyone else I had to prove myself. Advertising is a tough business to break into, especially as a creative.

This past weekend I finally took a long overdue staycation to relax and spend time with my younger brother, who made the 3-hour trek in from Wisconsin to visit. The W Lakeshore was kind enough to invite us to stay in a luxury suite, so we could enjoy the fashionable luxury of their brand-new $40 million renovation.

I live-blogged my experience on twitter and Instagram, where you can follow me at @chistreetstyle. We made the most of my ‘staycation’ with a visit to the Museum of Science & Industry, a long-overdue ride on the Chicago Architecture Foundation boat tour, and – of course – a visit to Giordano’s for Chicago-style pizza. We went full tourist, and it was a blast!

As the only hotel in Chicago on Lake Michigan, the W Lakeshore is nestled close to downtown but with the tranquility of lakefront views. This was exactly what I needed to recharge before fashion week next month. Thank you W Hotels for such a wonderful weekend!
