During a late night trawling the internet, I came across this magnificent cape from Rodarte x Opening Ceremony. My adoration for capes, shapeless shirts, and loose-fitting coats is well known. One of my favorite looks to wear year round is a pair of skinny pants balanced with a billowing top, preferably with dolman sleeves. This cape is perfect for transition dressing in Chicago – which sadly, is year round. Even in the summer it gets a bit chilly at night. I am getting amped up for music festival season in Chicago and am strategically buying up cover-ups that can double as a blanket for sitting in the grass. Clearly I would be wearing something underneath this before I whipped it off in a dancing frenzy! I could easily see myself stretching out on this cape in Grant Park or the forests of Michigan to look at the stars while listening to concert music.
Some of you might think that using an $850 designer cape as a lawn blanket is blasphemy, but I like to think Kate and Laura would think it’s awesome to use one of their garments for both utilitarian and decorative purposes. Isn’t fashion all about breaking boundaries and exploring concepts of dress? I often speak about living through fashion, and this is an excellent example. Designer clothing isn’t meant to be hung in a museum (unless it’s a hand-feathered gown by Alexander McQueen…), it’s meant to be lived in. It’s wearable art. This cape captures the essence of what fashion means to me. It’s about incorporating design and visual concepts into the experiences you live through. And what better to experience a mindblowing music festival in than to be dressed in an equally mesmerizing Rodarte x Opening Ceremony brocade cape?
This cape is one of those timeless pieces to treasure in your wardrobe for decades. Or, like me, you can treasure the idea of this cape on a wish list and admire it online!
Purchase it (or at least window-shop it like I did!) on ShopBop.com

The theme this week is summer music festivals. The new incarnation of Rothbury is Electric Forest, held at the same location on Double JJ Ranch in Rothbury, Michigan. Tickets go on sale March 5 at 12 pm EST, grab yours while you still can! All the news about music festival line-ups has me yearning for the summer more than ever. After a long and snowy Chicago winter, I am getting excited thinking about the upcoming Chicago summer music festivals like Lollapalooza, Pitchfork, and North Coast Fest. The best part about living in Chicago are all the summer events so I put together a designer outfit themed around the Chicago music festivals.
It goes without saying that this outfit is for the fantasy music festival devoid of dirt or crazy people, and therefore exists solely in my daydreams. But seriously, how beyond is that psychedelic multicolored Missoni beaded dress? In another universe I could see myself wearing this to Coachella or Pitchfork, with the SWORD leather jacket thrown over top to keep warm during the evening. Metallic gold silk Tory Burch Leggings will keep my legs protected from the harsh rays of the sun. And the YSL Tribute heels – well a girl can dream, can’t she? Only the most dedicated fashionista could survive a music festival, even an urban one like Lollapalooza, in these bad boys. A Michael Kors watch to keep track of the time to avoid missing the next show, and a summery Proenza Schouler canvas purse to keep festival necessities close at hand.
When I first started this blog I had a weekly feature I called “Wish List.” I wrote posts about items I was lusting after and created little wish lists. It was more about me having fun than anything else. After spending the past six months exclusively focusing on developing my street style skills I think it’s time for me to get back to being creative with this blog and thinking outside of the box. So after much deliberation I decided to resurrect this feature. The “Wednesday Wish List” will give my readers a chance to get to know me and my tastes better. As if you didn’t already know I am totally consumed with luxury and designer labels!
