Last Thursday I brought one of the winners of my “Tweet Your Feet” competition, Kelly of the wonderful blog Path To Positive, with me to the Havaianas party. I had only met her once before at my Kokorokoko party but she is a wonderful person so naturally we hit it off immediately.
I love being around other positive people, and I adore that her fashion blog is centered on positivity. As a Buddhist and a former college hippie, I try really hard to always spread positive energy and kindness. It’s a personality trait that backfires more than I would like, because I give everyone the benefit of the doubt of having a good heart until they prove themselves otherwise to me. I would rather get burned occasionally than be another mean-spirited “fashion bitch” who sees the worst in everyone, since we all know there are plenty of them out there already. One of the reasons I love street-style so much is because every photo I take brightens someone’s day. I love the social interaction side of street-style and I love connecting with people and making them feel good about themselves for being exactly who they are.
Obviously I was thrilled to spend the afternoon hanging out with Kelly, who combines her positive spirit with fashion and personal style on her blog. The fashion industry and the blogosphere needs more positive people like Kelly! Fashion is about freedom and personal expression. I see personal style as a creative endeavor and a form of art, so all forms of fashion are equally valid and valuable in their own right. Street style photography allows me to shine a spotlight on those individuals with the courage and spirit to really put themselves out there. After all, the world would be a boring place without interesting people, right?

There are few things I love more than to photograph a hot fashionable couple together. Just like John and Courtney, Elise and Jesse mirror each others’ styles unnervingly well. I find this such a fascinating phenomenon, although I probably shouldn’t be shocked this happens so often since couples tend to develop similar tastes in food, music, and books as well. So why not fashion? Perhaps its the visual nature of this phenomenon that is so striking. I can literally see how these two people are affecting each other creatively and expressively.
Elise and Jesse remind me so much of the Rick Owens aesthetic with the torn shirts, drop crotch pants, and monochrome palette. Unsurprising considering Jesse is wearing Rick Owens sneakers, and both cited him as a primary influence in their personal style.

Dani’s music concert ready look is getting me pumped for Electric Forest Festival this weekend! EFF is set on the Double JJ Ranch just like its predecessor Rothbury. The big change was a shift towards electronica and jamtronica and the primary festival grounds will now be Sherwood Forest. I am most excited about Sunday night, which features Pretty Lights from 11pm to 12:30 am and EOTO until 1:15 a.m. This year promises to be much more laid back and with much less pressure than in years past, as my festival partner this year is my best friend from college. I’m looking forward to relaxing and taking it easy with one of my favorite people on the planet. I need a vacation!!!
BUT – being the workaholic that I am, I will still technically be working. I am traveling to EFF to document the fashion of the festival goers. I am very much looking forward to a break from urban street-style hunting and am excited to document the kaleidoscopic looks the festies and female wooks bring to these rural environments. As a member of the press, I have access to power and wi-fi, so expect updates through out the weekend!
