Humboldt Park has fast become one of my favorite neighborhoods in Chicago to explore. When a close friend of mine moved there recently, I finally became acquainted with one of Chicago’s most vibrant neighborhoods on a more intimate level. My outfit was inspired by Chicago’s park system, so I stuck to a neutral color palette to allow the materials to take center stage. And just as Chicago’s neighborhoods blend together, the off-whites complement each other as the eye moves seamlessly between the faux fur collar and sequined front.

Usually my outfits are quite colorful, so I challenged myself in a different direction. I’m also in love with this incredible cashmere/angora blend sweater covered in feather-shaped sequins. I bought it at Kokorokoko Vintage, one of my absolute favorite stores in Chicago. Combining sequins and cashmere/angora in a single garment? Now that’s just plain brilliant. Nothing in this outfit cost me over $35. Most of the pieces were thrifted or vintage, because I wanted to capture the individualist spirit I feel embodies Humboldt Park. And just like with vintage, often times it’s the overlooked things, the pieces that are passed over by the masses, that have the most character and spirit.

I felt like I could go a little crazy with the textures, beside the fun is in the details. Sticking to a neutral palette gave me the freedom to explore clashing materials. I’m sure this vintage pearl clutch was designed for evening, but I love to wear more glamorous pieces with more casual looks. It makes the day feel more special! My best friend Sarah gave me these snakeskin Sally Hansen Salon Effects polish strips, which were easier to use than I anticipated (and have lasted for DAYS)!

Lately I’ve found it hard to wear anything but my new vintage heels, which make my feet look like they’re dipped in latex. Or like I’m water-skiing barefoot on an oil slick. I adore them. Why don’t mass-market companies make affordable shoes in innovative designs instead of copying Prada, Celine and Givenchy every season? Instead of ripping off other designers work, it’d be wayyyyy cooler for fast-fashion companies and mass apparel brands to create their own trends and unique pieces.

For the longest time my wardrobe has been dominated by bright colors and patterns. Lately I’m inspired by neutrals like creams and tans, shades that used to bore me. God, this must be what it feels to start getting older! Next thing you know I’ll be wearing sensible shoes and puffer coats… haha just wait!
