Neutrals in Humboldt Park

Neutrals in Humboldt Park

Humboldt Park has fast become one of my favorite neighborhoods in Chicago to explore. When a close friend of mine moved there recently, I finally became acquainted with one of Chicago’s most vibrant neighborhoods on a more intimate level. My outfit was inspired by Chicago’s park system, so I stuck to a neutral color palette to allow the materials to take center stage. And just as Chicago’s neighborhoods blend together, the off-whites complement each other as the eye moves seamlessly between the faux fur collar and sequined front.

Usually my outfits are quite colorful, so I challenged myself in a different direction. I’m also in love with this incredible cashmere/angora blend sweater covered in feather-shaped sequins. I bought it at Kokorokoko Vintage, one of my absolute favorite stores in Chicago. Combining sequins and cashmere/angora in a single garment? Now that’s just plain brilliant. Nothing in this outfit cost me over $35. Most of the pieces were thrifted or vintage, because I wanted to capture the individualist spirit I feel embodies Humboldt Park. And just like with vintage, often times it’s the overlooked things, the pieces that are passed over by the masses, that have the most character and spirit.

Neiman Marcus x Target Collaboration Wishlist!

Neiman Marcus x Target Collaboration Wishlist!

November 5, 2012

Last week, Target unveiled its unprecedented collaboration with luxury retailer Neiman Marcus, Holiday24. Together they hand-selected 25 American designers, all of whom sell their collections to Neiman Marcus. The designers created 50 gifts for the holiday season. Ranging from Christmas ornaments to clothing (of course), these coveted pieces are sure to become treasures cherished for years to come.

Christmas is nearly two months away, but I’ve already put together my gift wishlist. For my friends and family who live in Arkansas – where the Target lines are guaranteed to be either super short or non-existent – I’m looking at YOU.

Although both Rodarte pieces are specifically made for the holidays, I think I’ll frame and display the wrapping paper like art and hang the galaxy-inspired ornament in my closet. I’m someone who went to Space Camp in 5th grade and took Astrophysics as an elective at Michigan State, so if you think I’ll be passing up on either of these, well…

Every girl needs a way to open letters in style, no? This Eddie Borgo letter opener is like jewelry for my desk.

The Proenza Schouler boys have the Midas touch and their latest collaboration with Target is no different. Living in Chicago means I can never have one too many sweatshirts, and I adore the paint-splattered look of this top. The iPad case brings a relaxed energy with its craft-like touch, balancing out its technological utility with a healthy dose of wit.

Chicago... Magnificent Mile: Eric

Chicago… Magnificent Mile: Eric

November 5, 2012

I’ve said this over and over again on my blog: I wish more men were comfortable experimenting with prints. Hell, it’s bad enough trying to get men to play with color when it comes to fashion. That’s why I jumped into action when I spotted Eric near the Historic Water Tower. Whoa, a man who’s not only bold enough to wear prints, he actually does it to perfection? Now that’s hard to find.

The southwestern prints in the shirt and jacket synergize well. There’s a continuum of ways to wear print these days, ranging from matchy-matchy (a la Marni & Prada) or clashing (done to perfection at Suno). I love how the silk scarf and Ray-Ban sunglasses soften up the outfit with a healthy dose of personality. Now, if Chicago only had more men like Eric…
