Virginie + Claire Courtin-Clarins

Virginie + Claire Courtin-Clarins

October 20, 2014

Now, if it wasn’t for pumpkin-flavored everything heralding the arrival of fall, last week’s chilly weather drove the point home. Cold is here to stay! That means it’s time for us Chicago women to update our wardrobes with functional fashion to keep us warm (and stylish). Even though I snapped the ultra-stylish Courtin-Clarins sisters in New York, in this photo they exemplify functional fall fashion.

Facing harsh temperatures and icy lakefront winds, we Midwesterners have to dress for cold weather. I’m continually impressed by the fashionable ingenuity I see on the streets of Chicago, as more than ever people refuse to use winter as an excuse to dress poorly. The Windy City has upped its style game in recent years. The proof on our sidewalks.

So, what’s the secret to dressing well in Chiberia? A wardrobe of coats is key. Why not take a page out of the Courtin-Clarins playbook and add one of this season’s must-have outerwear styles to your closet?

Get Virginie’s Look: White Trench Coat

Virginie’s chic trench coat proves that white winter outerwear might be the most modern approach yet. What was that you said about Labor Day?

Get Claire’s Look: Moto Vest + Red Plaid

Faux or fo’ real, I love fur. If you’re not into cocooning yourself in an oversized wooly coat (guilty), layering a fur vest over a red plaid shirt is a classic fall look that always looks great – indoors and out.

Please could we have a few more days of warm sunshine before it’s cold, dark and snowy? Fingers crossed the weather gods are kind to us this fall…

P.S. Why can’t we all have beautiful curly hair like Emily?

Whitney looks amazing in her Beyonce Surfboard Crewneck. I spotted her a few weeks ago on North Avenue while making my quarterly magazine run to Quimby’s. Lately I’ve been reminded how perfect sweatshirts are for the days I don’t feel like layering. Sometimes I just want to be warm (and still look good), and those are the times when I reach for my Target/Proenza Schouler gray sweatshirt or my striped Kenzo.

Fall is here to stay in Chicago, which means it’s time to stock up on those warm-weather fashion essentials. Here are some amazing sweatshirts I found, making it easier than ever for you to update your wardrobe for the season.
