Sometimes I’ll look up, and the perfect photograph is just waiting for me…

Multitasking at Prabal Gurung

Multitasking at Prabal Gurung

This season I’ve chosen to focus more on the ‘little moments’ outside the shows, like this woman multitasking as she walked into Prabal Gurung. In years past I shot the highly stylized full-length, low aperture portraits of the fashion-famous editors and buyers. I wanted to experiment with my photographic style this time around, and shooting for myself instead of clients allows me to do that. Plus, living in Chicago means that New York Fashion Week is the only time I can shoot candids like this – at home, I don’t have the luxury.

Outside of Alexander Wang’s show at Pier 94 tonight, several security guards were assigned to keep the photographers under control. This involved lots of yelling – and in the photo of Carine Roitfeld above, announcing that they were purposely blocking the shot.

Given the spectacle that’s evolved over the past 3 years since I first began shooting street-style in Chicago and at New York Fashion Week, I can’t say I blame them. Some photographers are incredibly aggressive. It’s intense (but fun) for me to shoot around so many other photographers, but I imagine it’s also stressful for the buyers, editors, and guests to constantly fight past a throng of cameras just to get into every show.

Now I’m left wondering what’s next for street-style photography at fashion week…
