Preetma Singh

It’s no secret I have a major girl crush on Preetma Singh, now market editor at the Wall Street Journal Magazine. In fact, I’m actually kind of shameless about it. I can count on one hand the number of people I go fangirl on publicly when I feature them on my blog. And yup, she’s one of them.

I could go on and on about how much I admire her fearless spirit, positive energy, and unbelievable sense of style. Instead, I’ll stop while I still have a shred of dignity and simply encourage my Chicago readers to check out her blog, The Working Girl Esq.

Hitomi... Varsity Jacket

Hitomi… Varsity Jacket

April 11, 2014

The weather is changing here in the Windy City. Spring is finally here! It’s time for a versatile jacket for those still-chilly days. So what’s the answer to this sartorial conundrum?

The varsity jacket. Sport chic is here to stay, and it’s no longer a niche style owned by Stella McCartney, Junya Watanabe and Jeremy Scott. Lots of designers are channeling athletic wear for Spring 2014. Riccardo Tisci and his Nike collaboration, Adidas x Topshop, and even Tory Burch is hooking up with Fitbit.

So why is the varsity jacket, often relegated to small town high schools and movies set in the 1950s, now suddenly so hot? It’s simple, it’s chic, and it’s very, very now. Everyone from high-fashion darling Jonathan Saunders to NY sportswear king Alexander Wang and of course, J.Crew, are producing varsity jackets this season.

I made it easy for you and picked out three of my favorite varsity jackets, but you’ll be seeing lots of them in stores this season. Leave a comment or tweet me when you buy yours! Get the look with one of these stylish varsity jackets:

1. Pac Sun Varsity Jacket, $49

2. Jonathan Saunders Mary Satin Jacket, $1,195

3. J.Crew Varsity Jacket, $118

I ran into Lydia this weekend on my way to photograph an upcoming magazine feature (lips are sealed!). Her oversized coat so perfectly captures that blasé sense of chic, and she’s clearly a master at making that undone-yet-done-up look feel so glamorous. Besides, head-to-toe black is always a great look.
