It’s rare for a puffy coat to catch my eye, so count this as a first. I was intrigued by Sana’s serene color palette of robin’s egg blue and periwinkle. The cool aqua tones are a welcome change from the black coats currently swarming Chicago’s streets.

Speaking of winter, how lovely was the dusting of large snowflakes this afternoon? I love when it looks like I live inside a snow globe, it makes the cold weather so much more romantic…

My love affair with flared coats began the first time I saw an Alaïa coat in person. It’s the most elegant silhouette and universally flattering. This semi-sheer flared mesh coat by Junya Watanabe was made with an athletic mesh fabric designed by PUMA. Utilitarian fashion at its finest, this stylish piece avoids the gimmicky feel that can sometimes befall unlikely partnerships by marrying the best of both brands.

Well done, Junya.

Gray beanies are officially a trend in Chicago this year. I blame Elin Kling for jumpstarting the beanie-as-chic-accessory movement with her styling for the Fall 2011 Tibi show, my first NYFW show. Girls strutted down the catwalk in gorgeous fall dresses topped off with a bright pink beanie. A year later I photographed Elin wearing a neon yellow beanie outside the Alexander Wang show, so maybe it’s less of a trend and more of an ethos.

I think there’s something glamorous about the simple beanie, a nonchalance I find really intriguing…
