Chicago Street Style: Nanah’s Classic Camel Coat

January 26, 2012

Nanah demonstrates how a camel coat lends an easy stylishness to any winter look. I particularly like how her polished vintage outerwear clashes with the beat-up boots because this is how real people dress. The truth is, no one wears their best shoes when there’s dirty slush on the streets.

Eva of Miss Renaissance

Eva of Miss Renaissance

Yesterday while out shopping with my friend Nicole (subject of an upcoming post) we decided to visit TopShop after a mandatory Argo Tea visit. Yes, I’m addicted to Chai Bubble Tea. It’s a problem I’m working on. Anyway, while I was standing in the checkout line at TopShop I saw a very stylish woman also standing in line, only she had a Celine luggage tote and arms full of clothing to be purchased. Of course my first instinct was to photograph her. I thought to myself, “Dammit! She’s inside. Ugh, I’m going to have to put down my scorpion brooch and wait outside for her to exit.” I have a personal rule about not pulling people out of stores because it disrupts commerce.

So I’m blatantly staring at her, like a freak, wondering if I can’t just dash out after buying my new brooch. I really didn’t want to go stand out in the cold so I’m zoning out, doing a mini cost-benefit analysis in my head. Then to my horror she makes eye contact with me. I cringe, thinking to myself I’m going to have give the whole street-style spiel in order to explain why I’ve been looking at her like a creeper.

“Amy!” She exclaims.

“YAAAAAAY!” I thought to myself as a wave of relief washed over me, having narrowly escaped both a socially awkward run-in AND having to go outside and stand in the freezing cold wind. I said to her “Oh you must read my blog?! I was just standing here thinking about how badly I want to photograph you but that since I won’t pull people out of stores I was planning to follow you out.” Then she said “It’s me, Eva from Miss Renaissance!”

Then it clicked and we had a great chat. I even got to meet “Mr. Renaissance.” I am so bad at recognizing people from the internet. I must say this because not only do I regularly check Eva’s blog Miss Renaissance, she and I follow each other on Twitter and Instagram. She’s even listed on my Blogroll page. Please don’t ever be offended if I don’t recognize you. I’m really good with names but terrible with faces.

It was really nice meeting you Eva in person and in such a great way! You can follow her on Twitter (@MsReniassance) and make sure to check out her blog Miss Renaissance.
