When I see people like Allison on the streets, overflowing with positive energy, I become aware of a certain lightness inside myself too. I’m always people-watching, even when I’m just an everyday person walking down the sidewalk without my camera. It’s incredible how moods are contagious, isn’t it? And with that brightly colored Mongolian wool scarf, vibrant personality, and megawatt smile, how could I miss her!

Just looking at Allison makes me feel cheerful. Wouldn’t you agree?

Laura… on her long, strange trip

I’ve written endless blog posts about my philosophy on street style so I know I’m a bit of a broken record. But it bears repeating! When I’m out hunting I look for people who visually communicate their individuality to the world, regardless of where on the fashion spectrum they fall. That’s why you’ll see a thrift-store outfit next to a shot of a socialite leaving a fashion show in New York. Since day one, I’ve always wanted to document the kaleidoscopic diversity of human creativity here in Chicago and beyond (ok, New York).

Laura is someone with a powerful sense of self; exactly what I’m looking for. You don’t have to be perfectly dressed to end up on my blog. She was surprised I stopped her last Saturday for a photograph, since she told me her look was ‘low-key’ compared to the rest of her wardrobe. People with an authentically cool sense of style are usually very interesting people. Sure enough I was right, as she was in Chicago for a brief layover on her 28-hour Amtrak day trip to visit a creepy coal-mining town in West Virginia.

People like Laura make me want to just jump on a train and go someplace crazy for a weekend… oh how I wish the United States had a train system like Europe. I’ve taken Amtrak twice and both experiences discouraged me from trying for a third. Maybe one of these days I’ll give good ol’ Amtrak another shot?

I spotted Jamarice downtown on Saturday, in town from New York. There’s something really compelling about a man wearing such a minimal, clean look with a simple color palette. Fellas, this one’s for you…
